TPDZ borders Baoshan District of Shanghai to the southeast. It is the closest state-level development zone to Shanghai. The primary industries in TPDZ are Healthcare & Medicine, Functional Materials, High-end Equipment Manufacturing, Petrochemical, Light Industry & Papermaking, Electrical Energy, Aerospace Parts New-energy Vehicles, New-generation Information Technology, Port logistics & Trade, etc. There is also a state-level comprehensive bonded zone in the development zone which is about 2 square kilometers. The port operates more than 209 shipping lines international and domestic. It is the largest port for foreign trade in the province, a trunk port for containers and a significant combined port to Shanghai international navigation center. It ranks No. 10 in the country and No.30 worldwide in terms of annual container throughput in 2019. By the first half of 2020, there are 33 state-owned enterprises, 35 U.S. companies, and 31 fortune 500 corporations operating in the said primary industries in the development zone.
Taicang Port is designated as an important component of Shanghai International Navigation center, a container terminal, and a hub of river and sea transport.

Direct near-sea shipping lines transport to 22 ports in Japan, Korea, Russia, South- east Asia and Taiwan.
Domestic trading lines cover 19 main ports near the sea, like Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Xiamen, Quanzhou, Ningbo, Yingkou, Lianyungang and Haikou.
Yangtze River canal branches cover all ports near the Yangtze River, such as Chongqing and Wuhan.

Adjacent to the core area of the Port City, Taicang Port Comprehensive Bonded Zone was approved by State Council in May, 2013. The address of the Bonded Zone is No.9 Beihuan Road, Taicang. Its planning area is 2.07 square kilometers, The Phase I receiving area is 0.85 square kilometers. The Bonded area is 0.85 square kilometers. The Bonded Zone aims to establish four key platforms which are: International Logistics Platform, International Commerce Platform, R&D Manufacturing Platform and Functional Innovation Platform.
