Internship with China Macro Group (full-time / paid)

China Macro Group (CMG) invites internship applications for Q2 2022 / as of April 2022 for paid full- or part-time internships for a duration of 3-4 months. This internship program targets Bachelor and Master graduates, PhD candidates or Postdocs as well as young professionals interested to explore a move into the field of strategic China
analysis and consulting.

About CMG: CMG provides original, fact-based and calibrated China policy and market analysis to advise on China strategies, cooperation concepts and negotiations for the European private sector, governments and investors; in its policy analysis, it puts a particular focus on China’s economic, financial, foreign, trade, S&T and social policies – www.chinamacro.ch or www.chinamacro.eu.

Your profile

  • Academic background in economics, political economy, finance, political science, public policy, law, technology management or international relations either in China or with focus on China
  • Excellent Chinese language skills, esp. reading (minimum of HSK5 in 2010-2021 HSK scheme)
  • Research and analysis experience on contemporary China topics
  • Professional conduct of verbal and written English
  • Proactive personality, rapid learner, analytical and fact-based working approach, curious and inquisitive mind, team-player, output orientation, high diligence for high-quality products, effective communicator
  • Location: Beijing or Zurich, or any other location (for remote internship)
  • Prior living / working experience in China a plus

Senior Analyst in China’s financial system at China Macro Group (CMG)

Primary role: act as lead expert for build-up of the finance advisory practice at CMG combining deep expertise on China’s financial system and understanding of Swiss/European target clients

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead CMG’s research on financial market trends, policies and regulations in particular pertaining to China’s banking system, insurance market, capital market, PE/VC market, real estate market, financial market regulations including from PBOC/CBIRC/CIRC/SAMR/MOF, ESG/green finance, opening up, marketization reforms and capital controls, licensing procedures, FinTech and central bank digital currency (CBDC)
  • Support fast-paced client assignments in cross-cultural settings advising on strategies for Swiss and European financial institutions including leading a team of analysts to deliver quality analysis and recommendations
  • Support a bi-weekly Executive Brief with concise analysis on critical developments in China as well as lead a Financial Dashboard tracking key indices of China’s financial market and system

Your profile:

  • Relevant academic training with bachelor education in China in fields such as economics, finance or banking complemented by an international post-grad education further solidifying finance expertise highly preferred
  • A minimum of 5-8 years of relevant working experience in analytical and strategic roles in analyzing China’s financial market trends, policies and regulations; relevant networks in China’s financial sector a strong plus
  • Up-to-date thematic expertise in all key areas backed-up by practical experience especially in China, academic studies, further certificates and expertise on policy and regulatory research and advisory
  • Understanding of Swiss and European banking and insurance sector and their involvement in the Chinese market and their strategic needs are strong pluses
  • Strategic thinking, outstanding analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills as well as strong quantitative skills including statistical methods and modelling
  • Professional service mindset, creativity, can-do attitude, personal resourcefulness, team player, cross-cultural awareness and agility to adapt to ever changing market and client needs
  • Highest level of professional ethics and ability to inspire trust in client communication and interaction

Primary role: support continuous economic policy tracking, trend assessment and deriving of strategic implications

Key responsibilities:

  • Support CMG’s research on economic trends, policies and regulations in particular pertaining to ongoing reforms of China’s socialist market economy, market entities and ownership concepts, state sector and SOEs, public finance and fiscal policies, business environment policies, production factor liberalization, public procurement policies, industrial policies, opening-up and foreign direct investment, special economic zones,
    anti-monopoly and price setting policies, market governance policies as well as trade policies
  • Special focus lies on tracking key economic policymakers including State Council, NDRC, MOFCOM, MOF, MOHURD and MIIT as well as especially the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR)

Your profile:

  • Relevant academic training with bachelor education in China in fields such as economics, political economy, public finance or public policy complemented by an international post-grad education further solidifying economic expertise highly preferred
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant working experience in analytical and strategic roles in analyzing China’s economic market trends, policies and regulations; relevant networks in economic research circles a plus
