InterSME Sustainability Breakfast Seminar – Small Business, Big Impact

Worldwide, SMEs account for approximately 90% of businesses and therefore play a crucial role in achieving a more sustainable world. However, sustainability is not yet deeply entrenched in the majority of these businesses.

During this InterSME breakfast seminar, our expert panel will explain how SME’s can make sustainability work in their advantage, offering inspiration and practical solutions. Sustainable businesses tend to be more efficient businesses; there are very tangible benefits such as lower electricity bills and reduced wastage. Furthermore, sustainability measures make your company more interesting for investors, clients and employees. Some SME’s even take it a step further, and have sustainability as their business model.


Frans Otten – Clean technology investor & Entrepreneur

Topic: How taking sustainability measures makes your company attractive for investors

Frans Otten is serial entrepreneur in the Netherlands and Hong Kong. Frans is Founder and CEO of Ellipz Lighting, an LED company that revolutionalizes the way we make and use light. Frans was founder and partner of Tendris, a company that initiates, manages and invests in ventures that leverage innovative technologies and business concepts that are profitable and good for people & planet. Prior to Tendris, Frans worked for ABN AMRO in Equity Capital Markets and worked as a corporate lawyer at Nauta Dutilh, one of the leading Dutch law firms. Frans holds a Dutch Law degree from Leiden University.

Merrin Pearse – Sustainability Strategist

Topic: How to optimize your processes to become more sustainable and efficient

Dr Merrin Pearse is a Sustainability Strategist who blends together his formal training as a Land Surveyor with his passion of reconnecting people with nature. In the 10+ years Merrin has been in Hong Kong he has been very active in local environmental awareness raising. During the 4 years that Merrin worked at Friends of the Earth (HK) he managed projects on waste and air pollution. Now as a freelance consultant he works with some of Hong Kong’s largest companies to help communicate and facilitate the adoption of more planet friendly approaches to business.


Alessandro Bisagni – Founder & Managing Director BEE – Bisagni Environmental Enterprise

Topic: How is technology impacting sustainability?

Alessandro Bisagni is the Founder and Managing Director of BEE, a sustainability engineering consulting and technology company specializing in the creation of green and healthy buildings. Alessandro graduated from McGill University with a specialization in Environmental Economics and Urban Planning. Before opening BEE, Alessandro was an Environmental Consultant for the international engineering firm ARUP, based out of their Hong Kong and Shanghai offices. Alessandro is also the co-Founder of the Sustainable Buildings Collaborative (SBC) China and current Chairman of Platinum Hong Kong, two professional industry groups whose mission is to spread green building knowledge across Greater China.



Job van der Noord – Director & Founder JN Marine Ltd.

Topic: Making your office more sustainable while reducing costs

Job van der Noord is director and founder of JN Marine Ltd. Job has lived in Hong Kong since 2005. Following 6 years in Business Development at a global logistics and shipping company in Hong Kong, Job set up his company in Hong Kong. The company supplies a range of premium quality LED lighting products for use in the maritime sector with it’s main focus on LED lighting for industrial, commercial and domestic use under its label JN LED. Nowadays customers in Hong Kong and more than 10 countries around the world are served.



Tom Uiterwaal – CEO Reconergy & chairman of the Environment and Energy Business Council of the European Chamber

Topic: How to have sustainability as a business model

Tom Uiterwaal is the Founder and CEO of Reconergy (Hong Kong) Ltd., active in the Waste-to-Energy industry both in Asia and Europe. The focus of Reconergy is on turning Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and Commercial Waste into biodiesel and green electricity. Tom has been active in the Waste-to-Energy industry in Asia since 2008. Before Tom moved to Asia he worked for 12 years with CARGILL, the biggest food ingredients company in the world, in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Tom is also Chairman of the Environmental & Energy Business Council of the European Chamber in Hong Kong.
