The role of the Samaritans in combating suicide in Hong Kong
|In 2016, 937 people killed themselves in Hong Kong. In other words, there are two to three suicides every day. The Samaritans, originally founded in the UK, was established in Hong Kong in the 1970s after a series of students suffering exam pressure killed themselves. Today, Hong Kong remains a high pressure and stressful place, with individuals coping with economic, relationship and health problems. The Samaritans aims to alleviate human misery and loneliness as well as supporting the actively and potentially suicidal mainly through a confidential 24-hour hotline. Samaritans volunteers are not professional counsellors but go through an intensive in-house training programme. The guiding principle is not to offer advice but by ‘active listening’ explore a caller’s feelings and the options they may have in a non-judgemental way. While all Samaritans are unpaid volunteers, they need funds for administrative support and publicity and outreach programmes.|
