SWISS to increase long-haul services in its winter schedules

SWISS will be expanding its range of long-haul services in the coming winter schedules to offer its customers even more attractive travel options. The destinations which will receive more SWISS services this winter include Miami (USA), Shanghai (China), Singapore (Singapore) and Cairo (Egypt). SWISS will also continue to make every possible effort to maintain maximum stability throughout its flight schedules.

SynSense presents new robot and receives millions from China

The Zurich-based startup company SynSense has raised a double-digit million amount from two Chinese venture capital firms, Maxvision and RunWoo, in a strategic investment round. The exact amount of the investment was not disclosed, according to an article from startupticker.ch. The new capital will be used to further develop the DYNAP-CNN2 chip. The chip is designed to provide low-power-consumption support for complex visual applications such as autonomous flying and obstacle avoidance. SynSense specializes in neuromorphic computing, which involves computing processes that are carried out using neuromorphic chips. The chips learn based on the model of the human brain.

ABB Group launches contest to cultivate local innovative talents

With China entering a new era of green and innovation-led growth, ABB Group, the Swiss technology company, launched the 2023 ABB Cup Innovation Contest in China to support the cultivation of local innovative talents, according to a statement released by the company. Themed “Intelligent Technologies for the Future”, the contest this year involves areas such as power electronics, machine learning, mathematical modeling, industrial robotics and human-computer interaction, with the aim of promoting open and innovative thinking among young people, and enhancing their ability to solve real-world problems by exploring interdisciplinary approaches.

China High-quality Path Presents Key Opportunities for Reinsurance Industry

The insurance industry is expected to be on the track of steady development in China as the economy rapidly recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, executives of global reinsurer Swiss Re said. China’s economic recovery this year is likely to be consumption-led and see stronger growth in contrast to the global economic slowdown, said Christian Mumenthaler, CEO of Swiss Re. “We observed that the pandemic had a lasting impact on the risks and demand for insurance,” Mumenthaler said. According to the Swiss Re Institute, global demand for risk protection has increased after pandemic, people are now more used to online interaction and rate hardening in non-life commercial insurance lines continues.

Clariant Announces Grand Opening of its New Plant in China

Clariant announced today the grand opening of its new CATOFIN catalyst production site in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, China. Investing in innovations such as CATOFIN is a core element of Clariant’s new purpose-led strategy, as expressed in the statement ‘Greater chemistry – between people and planet.’ Beyond that, the site serves to increase the already expanding footprint in China, adding on to the existing nearby catalyst plants in Jinshan and catalyst R&D center within the One Clariant Campus in Shanghai.

Zurich retains top spot in Smart City Index 2023

Zurich has topped the global IMD Smart City Index 2023 for the fourth consecutive time. The ranking uses diverse criteria to measure how smart a city is according to its citizens. Of the 141 cities surveyed, Lausanne scooped 5th and Geneva 9th place. The most striking result of this year’s analysis is that of the top 20 cities, 17 have been in the index since its inception. Of these 17 cities, six have shown either continuous improvement or stability from year to year. These so-called “super champions” are Zurich, Oslo, Singapore, Beijing, Seoul and Hong Kong.

More than 800 000 Swiss Nationals Lived Abroad at the End of 2022

In 2022, the population of Swiss citizens residing abroad exceeded the 800 000 mark. This number showed continued growth compared with 2021 (+1.5%), but also between 2002 and 2022 (+34%). Europe was still the preferred continent, although more and more Swiss citizens lived in parts of Asia. These are some of the results of the statistics on the Swiss abroad from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

The Swiss Pavilion at the 3rd Hainan Expo from April 11 to 15

Thanks to the guest country of honor status of Switzerland and the outstanding performance at the first Hainan Expo, the Swiss Pavilion has always been one of the most-mentioned country pavilions in the Chinese media. This year, the Swiss Business Hub China of the Embassy of Switzerland in Beijing in collaboration with the Switzerland Global Enterprise (S-GE) will again operate and manage the Swiss Pavilion at the 3rd Hainan Expo from April 11 to 15, 2023 in Haikou, Hainan Province.  The Swiss Pavilion with an area of 84 m² will be located in Hall 4, Booth 4B-03 of the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Centre Haikou. It will showcase the most representative elements of Swiss innovation and lifestyle.

WinGD to deliver methanol engines for COSCO SHIPPING Lines container vessels

WinGD will supply 10X92DF-M methanol-fuelled engines to four 16,000 TEU container vessels to be built for COSCO SHIPPING Lines at COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) Co. Ltd.These vessels will be delivered from 2025 and will feature WinGD’s first X92DF-M engines in China. This ground-breaking order was celebrated at a signing ceremony attended by the collaboration partners from COSCO and CSSC onsite at CMD on 23 March. The methanol engines will be delivered from engine builder CSSC CMD in Shanghai, which is jointly developing the engines with WinGD. The fourth vessel in the series will be the first to have methanol engines installed from the beginning. The earlier vessels will initially have methanol-ready X92-B engines installed and will be converted for methanol before entering service.
