Connecting People around the Gotthard: Swiss Alumni Event 2016

The Consulate General of Switzerland in Hong Kong cordially invites Alumni of Swiss Public Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences currently living in Hong Kong and Macao (incl. former exchange students) as well as current exchange students from Switzerland in Hong Kong to the traditional Swiss Alumni Event 2016: Connecting People Around the Gotthard: Swiss Alumni Event 2016. On 1 June, 2016, Switzerland celebrated the opening of the worldÕs longest railway tunnel, which was a milestone of worldwide significance. For this occasion we invited Prof. Emeritus Christian SchlŸchter Ð Assistant Professor between 1986 and 1983 at the Institute of Geology at the ETHZ and Professor and Chair in Quaternary and Environmental Geology at the University of Bern Ð to talk about this masterpiece in engineering from a geological point of view. Join us for this fascinating talk about the geology and the difficulties to cut a tunnel through the Gotthard Massive. Additionally the Consulate General of Switzerland will present a small exhibition which documents the Gotthard Base Tunnel from sketch to construction, proudly brought to you by Presence Switzerland.

Swiss Embassy releases China Economic report

The bi-annual Economic Report looks into ChinaÕs current economic development. It offers an overview of ChinaÕs macroeconomic situation, and analyses the structural reforms launched in 2015 as well as in China’s 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020). ETH Zurich is the best university on the continent

The Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich is the best university in continental Europe and the 19th worldwide, according the latest Shanghai ranking of world universities. The top three spots were captured by Harvard, Stanford and UC Berkeley in the US. The University of Cambridge in the UK is ranked the best European university, coming in fourth place overall. All the universities to rank ahead of the ETH Zurich come from the US and the UK. The ETH Zurich is followed by the University of Tokyo to complete the top 20. The ETH Zurich moved up one notch from 2015, though it had placed 19th two years ago. The university has been steadily moving up the ranking over the years, having come in 27th ten years ago. The Shanghai ranking has been published annually since 2003. It compares universities according to six indicators, including the number alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals and the number of articles cited in scientific indices.

Joint Efforts to Combat the Illegal Trade in Shahtoosh Shawls

In 2015, 70 shawls made from the wool of the protected Tibetan antelope (shahtoosh shawls) were seized in Switzerland. Trade in these luxury products is prohibited. To combat this illegal trade, INTERPOL and Switzerland invited countries to a workshop to define measures for a coordinated international approach.

Switzerland to open 9 new visa centers in China

The Embassy of Switzerland in China is expanding its visa services to more Chinese cities and it will open nine new Visa Acceptance Centers in nine cities from June to July. Chinese visitors to Switzerland and the Schengen region, of which Switzerland is a member country, can hand in applications at more convenient locations and enjoy faster services. This is expected to ease holiday preparations for Chinese tourists traveling to Switzerland this coming summer. The nine cities, in order of opening, are Xi’an, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Shenzhen, Kunming, Changsha, Fuzhou, Jinan and Chongqing. The new centers are scheduled to be inaugurated between June 15 and July 15 and will be operated by the embassy’s commercial partner TLScontact. The centers are authorized by the embassy in China to accept applications for short stay individual visas and provide administrative support services and biometric data implementation. The expansion of the visa services is another initiative of the embassy to meet the increasing number of Chinese tourists to Switzerland following the opening of three centers in Chengdu, Wuhan and Shenyang in January.

Swiss Watch Industry is the Most Affected by Counterfeit Products

A recent OECD report put watches at the top of the list of the worldÕs most pirated products. We take a look at the impact of fake watches on the Swiss watch industry with the help of Jean-Daniel Pasche, President of the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. The report values the world trade in counterfeit goods at USD 461 billion (2.5% of total world trade) for 2013 based on customs seizure statistics. Unsurprisingly, China and Hong Kong are Ð by far Ð the biggest geographical sources of these counterfeit goods. Footwear is the biggest product category found in the goods seized, which probably explains why brands such as Salvatore Ferragamo are now fitting RFID chips to their shoes that can be used to confirm their authenticity.

Swiss Expert Andreas Goetz Helps China Drop by Drop

Andreas Goetz, a Swiss expert on water management, considers his work in China for more than a decade a great success. “We first made a rope of cooperation. Now, it has developed into a net,” the-68-year-old says of the roles Chen Lei, China’s water resources minister, and he have played on various projects. The two men first met in 2001, when Goetz was deputy director of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. In its journey to become a developed country, Switzerland has gained much experience in water management and has collected relevant data for years. During their interactions, the two experts found that both countries were pursuing similar goals in water management, and the first joint project began in 2002 after news of a Yangtze River flood drew Goetz’s attention.

China Becomes 4th Most Important Foreign Source Market for Swiss Tourism

Overnight hotel stays of Chinese tourists in Switzerland increased by 33.3% year-on-year in 2015, making China the fourth most important foreign source market for Swiss tourism, according to statistics released by Swiss Federal Statistical Office on Tuesday. In 2015, the hotel sector registered 19.6 million overnight stays by foreign tourists in Switzerland, a decline of 1.7% compared to 2014. Due to factors such as the strong Swiss franc, European overnight stays declined by 1.2 million.

China rolls out 144-hour visa-free policy

Citizens of Switzerland and of 50 other countries will be permitted visa free entry into China for short term stays of not more than six days, the Chinese State Public Security Ministry announced. Shanghai, Nanjing and Hangzhou have become the first cities in China to implement a 144-hour visa-free policy. The policy allows foreign visitors to arrive and depart from any of these three cities via airports, cruise terminals and train stations without a visa, providing their overall stay is within the six-day limit.
