Syngenta will Sell GM Corn not Approved by China

by swisscham in Engineering, Manufacturing

Syngenta AG, the world’s largest crop chemicals company, has commitments to sell its entire supply of a genetically modified corn variety that is not approved by China, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said on Friday. Vilsack said whether or not China eventually approves the corn, known as Agrisure Viptera or MIR 162, it was still being sold and that Syngenta has “basically have sold out” of its supply for the 2014 growing season. Chinese authorities have rejected some 600,000 tonnes of U.S. corn since November because they contained MIR 162, which has not been approved for use there. Two leading U.S. grain groups asked Syngenta last month to suspend the commercial use of Viptera and Duracade, a new strain of corn that the company plans to roll out this year, until the Chinese approvals are sorted out.

Industry Could be More Fired up to Save Energy

by swisscham in Engineering, Manufacturing

Research commissioned by ABB Group, the power and automation technology company headquartered in Switzerland, confirms that energy efficiency remains a high priority for industrial executives. Of more than 300 in manufacturing and power sectors surveyed by the Economist Intelligence Unit, almost all said energy efficiency will be a crucial success factor for their companies over the next two decades. But three-quarters of them also said they face barriers in improving energy efficiency and data. Many producers in the steel industry, which is the main industrial energy user, have dramatically reduced consumption by switching from blast furnaces to electrical processes, which use only half the energy. However, among those that have gone the electrical route, wide national and regional variations emerge (consumption in China, Russia, Ukraine and Brazil is 1.5 to 2 times higher than in Japan, for instance). Take China, for example. While the share of industrial energy consumption remains stable on a worldwide level and is decreasing in developed countries, it is increasing in China: from 34 % in 1990 to 40 % in 2010.

SGS SA, the world’s largest third-party testing, inspection and certification company by revenue, is expanding its services in consumer goods and manufacturing in China, a company official said. The Switzerland-based company will add more than 1,000 employees and set up another 10 laboratories in different locations throughout China this year, including a life sciences laboratory in Shanghai, a rail transportation lab in Chengdu and one for medical devices in Guangzhou. Shentu Xianzhong, managing director of SGS China, said China’s closer integration in the world economy has pushed its manufacturers to meet domestic and foreign quality standards. SGS entered the China market in 1991, soon after the nation started to develop its certification and verification industry. Those activities didn’t become vital to the Chinese market until after the country became a member of the World Trade Organization in 2001.

by swisscham in Engineering, Manufacturing

Switzerland-based Syngenta AG is waiting for China to approve a strain of gene-modified corn present in several U.S. cargoes turned away from Chinese ports in recent months, the company said. Since November, China has rejected about 600,000 metric tons of corn from the United States, the world’s largest exporter, after detecting traces of MIR 162, also known as Agrisure Viptera, which is still awaiting approval from China’s farm ministry.
