by swisscham in Engineering, Manufacturing

Swiss pharmaceutical group Novartis reported Tuesday that its net profit rose 45% to USD 3.24 billion in the third quarter, on the back of growing business in emerging economies. However, this result contains the one-off effect of USD 800 million from selling its stake in US-based Idenix Pharmaceuticals. Revenues climbed 4% to USD 14.7 billion, compared to the same period last year, Novartis said at its Swiss headquarters in Basel. Novartis increased sales significantly in China, Brazil, and Russia. In addition, sales of recently developed products also added to the strong result. Revenue in this product segment jumped 21% to USD 4.9 billion. The operating profit rose 14% to USD 2.98 billion. Without the negative effect of the strong franc, the increase would have been 18%.

ABB Provides Innovative Underground Smart Substation Solution in Downtown Beijing

by swisscham in Engineering, Manufacturing

If you pass by Caishikou in downtown Beijing, it is hard to imagine that a substation is operating under this busy commercial district. The demand for reliable electricity is increasing exponentially in urban city center hubs, and space is at a premium when it comes to supporting large electrical installations. So placing the substation underground is an ideal solution. The 220 kilovolt (kV) Caishikou smart substation project started in 2013 and went into operation recently. A museum is now under construction on the ground above the substation. ABB has supplied several key power products for the project, including sensor enabled transformers, intelligent gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and iUnigear, a smart switchgear solution. The smart transformer also incorporates ABBÕs TEC ST (Transformer Electronic Control as an Intelligent Electronic Device) together with other smart components, and features real time monitoring, overload capability forecast, and ageing calculation. The transformer deploys water as a cooling medium on the ground making it a more environmental friendly and safer solution.

Straumann Reports Solid Revenue Growth and Sharp Rise in Profitability

by swisscham in Engineering, Manufacturing

In the first six months of 2014, the Straumann Group posted solid revenue growth in local currencies. Despite currency headwind, profitability increased significantly, thanks to operational leverage and the full benefit of cost-reduction initiatives implemented last year. Strong demand for dental implants spurred growth in local currencies to 5% but unfavorable exchange rates reduced the increase in Swiss francs by 3%, bringing revenue to CHF 359 million. All regions posted first-half increases with Asia/Pacific and North America delivering almost two thirds of the overall growth. After a strong first quarter, revenue growth slowed expectedly in Q2, reflecting the Easter effect. Sales accelerated in China, where Straumann has recently taken a significant step to broaden its footprint and increase its business. Since 2003, the Group has operated through a single distributor, Beijing Finest Medical Group (BJFM), which had an important role in establishing Straumann as a market leader, particularly in the public hospital segment. However, with the private-practice segment growing rapidly and the market expanding geographically, a broader approach is needed.
