Swiss Vocational Training Model Could Work in China, Expert Says

by swisscham in Culture & Society

China plans to reform its vocational education system to develop the skilled workers it needs for innovation and upgrading production. But unlike developed countries like Germany and Switzerland, where vocational education has long been seen as an educational opportunity equivalent to an academic education, China has to overcome several institutional and cultural challenges hindering change, says an expert on vocational education in Switzerland. The key to developing quality vocational education is to let the companies play the lead role, not the government or schools, says Uschi Backes-Gellner, a professor at the University of Zurich in Switzerland, who specializes in the economics of education and training policies. In a recent interview with Caixin at the Sino-Swiss Economic Forum 2014 in Beijing, Backes-Gellner talked about Switzerland’s unique vocational education system, the challenges facing China and possible way of implementing the model in this country. The Nanpi County is 250 kilometers away from Beijing and is one of the 500 national poorest counties. In collaboration with partner organizations and individuals, including Swisscham members such as Lindt China or Swissmooh China, various supports have been offered to the Rothlin Primary School and the local community. Four years ago the school was rebuilt and got new equipments like a library, a cantine, water filter station, music room, laboratory. Before that the students had to study in old worn down dangerous factory buildings, in very poor conditions. Last week on 11 April 2014, Ms. Sonja Ršsli went to Nanpi County for a preparation visit to teach Swiss culture, art and music with her Swiss colleague Walti Sigrist, Superhorn, in a Swiss style at the Primary School this summer, which will definitely open a new horizon of local pupils. Chinese Bands Rock Europe

by swisscham in Culture & Society

When Michael Vonplon from Switzerland came to China in the mid-1990s, he learned Mandarin and made lots of friends, becoming one of the first people to organize raves in China, such as the party on the Great Wall in 1998. Almost 20 years passed, he still puts on parties, but on a larger scale, such as the China Drifting Festival. Under the label Miro China, which Vonplon founded in 2006, China Drifting Festival is a vehicle for the introduction of Chinese avant-garde music and visual arts in Europe. It has been held annually in Zurich, Switzerland, to expose Europe to the vibrant Chinese music scene. In 2014, the festival will travel outside of Switzerland for the first time, making stops in Beijing, Shanghai and Berlin, Germany. It will be headlined by Beijing-based rock bands Re-tros (short for Rebuilding the Rights of Statues) and Pet Conspiracy, Shanghai-based Duck Fight Goose and Swiss band One Sentence. Supervisor.
