PANEL DISCUSSION

1. Financial Opening – What are the Growth Market Opportunities and how is Hebei positioning itself as a Center for Financial Innovation?
At the Boao Forum for Asia in Hainan on April 10, President XI Jinping reaffirmed that China will further open up its economy—notably including the financial sector—to foreign players. According to FANG Xinghai, Vice Chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, Chinese finance will increasingly displace Chinese manufacturing as a major driver of shifting global economic patterns. Against this backdrop and China’s growing wealth, XIAO Zhen, President of Swiss Centers China, will shed light on growth market opportunities in China as well as Hebei’s unique role and potential to become a financial innovation powerhouse.

2. Joint Pursuits – What are the Competitive Advantages of Hebei and Swiss Enterprises and how can they capitalize on Growth together?
As financial opening is expected to gather momentum, Hebei has been pressing ahead with a reform agenda and targets to increase mixed ownership and ensure free access to various types of capital. But how can companies pivot in the right direction to capture the resulting growth market opportunities? The answer to that question may lie in the joint pursuit of business objectives. In this session, LIU Wanling, President of the Hebei Reform Strategy Research Committee, will bring out the competitive advantages and distinct strengths of Hebei and Swiss companies and how they could effectively capitalize on growth together.

3. Looking Ahead – Will Value Tailwinds accompany the rapid Growth of Technology Enterprises in Emerging Markets?
On April 21, the National Equities Exchange and Quotations system announced the signing of a memorandum with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, opening the door for more Mainland enterprises to apply for IPOs. But do the buzz and hype surrounding the listing of innovative and new technology companies go beyond higher valuations and improved liquidity? Will the rapid growth of these firms and their access to larger pools of capital transform the emerging market landscape as we know it and create new value and new value propositions in the future? SHI Yuqiang, Chief Economist of the Hebei Research Committee, explores this further.

History

The Swiss-Chinese Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) is a non-profit Swiss organization, originally founded in Zürich in 1980 by Dr. Uli Sigg – former Ambassador of Switzerland to China – and a group of business professionals. Its two main goals are to promote commercial relations between Switzerland and China and strengthen the political and economical bonds between the two governments and institutions. Given the exponential economical growth of China following Deng Xiaoping’s reforms, SCCC, in 1995, opened two new branches in Geneva and Lugano.

In 1996, SwissCham China, a non-profit organization, was founded with the opening of its first office in Beijing, which gave the Chamber a new dimension and scope for cooperation, business activities, strengthening the Sino-Swiss bonds and provide a platform for local Swiss and Chinese business people inside China. In 1997, a liaison office was established in Shanghai, as well as another liaison office opened 2006 in Guangzhou and 2019 in Chongqing.

In 2001, SwissCham China became a completely independent entity from SCCC and today – it is the only Swiss Chamber of Commerce to be officially registered with the Chinese government. All three liaison offices work in close collaboration to serve best the interests of the Swiss business community in China.
