Swiss Project Brings Electric Car to Alpine Tourism [CN] [en]

Alpmobil launched in central Switzerland a green tourism project to promote the use of battery-driven electric vehicles for summer visitors to the area some 100 km (63 miles) southeast of the Swiss capital Bern. The area's plentiful electricity supplies, created by harnessing the power of mountain waters through reservoirs and dams, have been tapped to provide over 20 battery charge-points serving up, Alpmobil says, totally green energy.

Nestle may go on buying spree with $28.1b proceeds from Alcon sale. About 1 billion consumers in emerging markets will increase their incomes enough to be able to afford Nestle products within the next decade, the Vevey, Switzerland-based company estimates. The world's largest food company gets about a third of its revenue from emerging economies and Chief Executive Officer Paul Bulcke aims to lift that to 45 percent within a decade. Nestle may purchase bottled water businesses in markets such as China, Frits van Dijk, head of Nestle's Asian business, said on June 22.

Swatch Group Chairman Nicolas Hayek, one of Switzerland's most prominent and colorful entrepreneurs, died of heart failure at his workplace on Monday, the company said. Hayek, who turned 82 in February, was widely credited with saving the Swiss watchmaking industry by reorganizing the ailing Asuag and SSIH watch companies, merging them into Swatch Group, which he took over with other investors in 1985. He became chief executive and chairman in 1986.

According to a report from the World Travel and Tourism Council, tourism is set to expand in the Chinese market because of the economic development of the nation. Chinese tourism is likely to move from being the fourth-largest market to second by 2018. China's consumption of travel products and services is predicted to increase four-fold during the same period. "I believe the impact of a strong Chinese tourism industry will have a positive overall effect on the world tourism industry because it will offset the weak performance from mature markets such as the United States and Europe" said Feng Hui, media manager of Switzerland Tourism.

Cheese industry experts believe this could be down to a rise in popularity abroad for “Swissness” – products that carry a quintessentially Swiss image, such as mountains and cows.
